Spring | Summer

Gert-Johan Coetzee along with tech giants Vodacom and Samsung have joined forces for an exclusive bespoke fashion, music, and tech collaboration, to celebrate the new Spring/Summer ‘23 collection.

Gert’s translation of the sunflower in this collection relays memories of his early childhood of vast lands filled with bright yellows and greens against a canvas with brush strokes in hues of reds and blues, especially seen as the sun sets over the South African sky. The sunflower encapsulates everything Gert-Johan Coetzee stands for; happiness, unity, and constant inspiration to face the sun and to see the positive in everything around us.

AUTUMN | WINTER

From the plains of the farm where I grew up in Koster, showcased in my previous collection Kraal Couture, where Ngunis graze freely in the hues of the African sun, we move to the depths of the African jungle. This was the inspiration for my AW22 collection, along with some of the art I have encountered during my travels, and my love for the baroque period.

Drawing on these three elements, my new collection was born. I created a print inspired by modern art together with my favourite shape: the human form. Exotic animals leap out from the depths of the jungle. Opulent pearls are used with abundance. The contrast of these different elements are woven into a tapestry to create a collection that tells a new story that represents my roots, my love for travel, art, and iconic time periods.

SPRING | SUMMER

The Barbie Loves Gert collection, comprising of 31 looks, celebrates individuality and the South African identity.

“I wanted Barbie to experience South Africa to its fullest by integrating an array of South African cultural elements into the collection. Striking pink from the Pedi culture complimented by geometric patterns inspired by the Zulu culture”, explains Gert-Johan Coetzee. Using “South African Beadwork in black and white, I took inspiration from the Xhosa culture, I wanted this collection to encapsulate a true South African experience.”

As brands that recognise the importance of diversity and inclusion, Barbie and Gert-Johan Coetzee continues to show the impact of representation.

Gert’s latest Collection is a juxtaposition of the softness of the Nguni cow print, representative of truth and freedom, with the stark construction of tulle, symbolic of the armour that needs to be shed, in order to embrace ourselves.
